First Impressions is a series that (re)introduces and reviews new brands to My Subscription Addiction, drawing from readers' requests for an insider's first look. Interested in seeing more reviews from this brand, or have another box in mind that you'd like to see reviewed? Let us know in the comments.

TokyoTreat is a monthly subscription box filled with candy and other tasty snacks that ship directly from Japan. Savory, sweet, salty—all the flavors you wish given to you with authentic products you would find in a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat ships monthly and includes full size premium products. With 12-17 treats in each box, they hit all of the flavor stops! More information about the snacks included can be found here.

This review is of the Premium Box which costs $37.50 a month + shipping.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

October is here, and to kick it off, I received my very first TokyoTreat box! To celebrate Halloween, we received the COOLEST box, decked out with all of the pumpkins. Packed tightly with over fifteen snacks, this box shipped directly from Japan and was one of the most fun subscriptions I've ever unpacked! Read below to see what I discovered.

What's Inside the Box

To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️

Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!

KitKat Apple Pie - Retail Value $7.99

Apple pie is a hot commodity in our house, as are KitKat bars, so my youngest son was thrilled to see this unlikely pairing in our very first TokyoTreat box. With a creamy white chocolatey coating, the inside of this bar has the warm spicy flavor that definitely imitates that of apple pie. A deliciously strange combination, we did enjoy this mashup and were really excited that we received an entire bag rather than one small bar! An impressive start to this month's Halloween box!

Boo! Ghost Gummies

While I am not the biggest fan of gummy candy, my kids definitely are. Charlie reached for this package immediately after discovering the KitKats. Ripping the bag open, we were pleasantly surprised to find multiple ghost gummies included in individual packages. Blue in color and made in pull apart strips, these gummies taste just like a green apple and are the best mix of sweet and sour. Charlie loved the fact that these turned his tongue blue, and went in for a second one before we were done with tasting the rest of the box!

Halloween Pizza Puffs

Puffs are always a good snack and these are extra light and fluffy with the softest taste of pizza. Similar to some US versions, these puffs are about the size of a piece of popcorn, but are soft to chew and perfect for movie night! Not only were these little guys tasty, but the adorable packaging had us sold too. Isn't the vampire tooth ghost just the cutest?!

Halloween Harvest Karinto

I'll be honest, when I read the description for this next snack, I wasn't buying it. That is until I gave them a try.... holy yum!!! This package of Halloween Harvest Karinto was an unlikely combination of vegetables like carrot, sweet potato, and onion, but fried with a sweet coating. If all veggies tasted this good I would definitely get more than my daily servings needed! Crunchy, sweet, and a tiny bit savory, this snack was surprisingly one of my favorites! Plus the kids loved them too!

Rich Caramel Danish

So far we are having a wonderful time snacking our way through Japan, and the fun doesn't look like it will be stopping anytime soon! While this snack didn't have a Halloween themed package, it was large in size and contained the best caramel danish. I have never had very good luck with prepackaged pastries, but this version proved a danish can be excellent even when prepackaged and shipped from Japan! With a soft, chewy texture, this tasted extremely fresh and had the best caramel and cinnamon flavor. Delish in flavor, Charlie snuck away with half of this snack, leaving only half for the rest of us. We found it also pairs nicely with butter, and we are definitely hoping to receive another one of these bad boys in the future!

Halloween Choco Pie

Back to the holiday packaging decor, this choco pie treat is everything a pre-packaged snack cake should be! Chewy, chocolatey, and with the perfect amount of marshmallow fluff filling, this is a nice little treat for after lunch. Similar to US versions, these taste very similar, but again, this Halloween packaging is just too stinkin' cute!

Pai no Mi Mini Pies Japanese Pudding - Retail Value $3.99

To be honest, I'm not much of a pie person. While I do like cheesecake and pecan pie, I'd rather have cake. That being said, these mini pudding pies were fabulous. Crispy and flaky on the outside with a sweet custard filling, these were unlike anything I have ever tried before, and I absolutely loved them. I was especially excited about this treat because we received a large package of them, so I was able to have multiple snacking sessions throughout the day!

Spooky Spicy Crackers

Sweet snacks are great, but savory ones have a special place in my heart too. These sweet little crackers provide a deliciously spicy twist on what appears to be a mini Ritz cracker. Upon taste, these are crispy and quite spicy, as promised! Featuring spicy peppercorn, they definitely have a kick to them and pair perfectly with BLT dip! To date, I have never experienced a cracker like this from the USA, and was happy to try them out as they have quickly become a new fave!

Halloween Fruit Juice Potion

Rounding out the box nicely, we received a fun drink mix! Again, placed in cute, yet spooky packaging, this item fits with the Halloween theme perfectly! Though I cannot read the instructions on the package, our handy pamphlet offers directions for preparing, and we were gifted with a delicious blue drink. Fruity in flavor, the kids had a fun time drinking this out of a wine glass, and thought the flavor was close to that of Kool-Aid. The individual packaging was convenient, and we wouldn't be sad if we received more of these in the future.

Halloween Angel Pie

Very similar to the "Choco Pie" we also received an "Angel Pie". With similar flavors, this chocolate, cake, and marshmallow treat was sweet to eat and a nice little snack. Also packaged in a cute wrapper, these treats have been so much fun to pull out of our lunch boxes at school to show the other kids!

Halloween Mini Hi-Chew

Hi-Chews are a popular US snack, but this packaging is sooo much cooler than anything we have! This pyramid shaped package houses a handful of chewy, fruity snacks in fun pastel colors. With pumpkins all over the packaging, I am so incredibly impressed with how well this company adheres to the monthly theme, and just how well thought out this box is so far!

Curry Ramen Noodles

We love Ramen noodles in this house, but typically utilize them in cool weather. I really appreciate this lunchtime inclusion, but have not had a chance to give these a try yet. In authentic Japanese packaging, these do have English translations listed for the directions, which is definitely helpful! Balancing this snack box out nicely, I'm so excited to give these a try.

Halloween Snack Stick

In a snack box with over a dozen items, we were bound to find something that we all 100% didn't love, and this snack stick was it. With a styrofoam-like texture, this stick had a mature wheat flavor, and we didn't love the brown sugar coating. Though it was far from our favorite item, we did enjoy trying a snack that was completely unfamiliar to us, even if it turned out to be a bust.

Halloween Marshmallow

Marshmallows are another favorite in our household, but we've never tried a custard filled on before! With a soft and fluffy outside, it looks like a flattened American marshmallow. When punctured though, a fluffy yellow custard is inside! I thought this was a fabulous flavor combo, but Charlie didn't find it appealing at all. Looks like it's more for mom!

Pari Pari Pumpkin Senbei Cracker

While our pamphlet includes 15 treats, the actual box contained an additional one! This first one was actually pictured in the pamphlet alongside other treats, but didn't have a description. It's a pumpkin shaped cracker that has a similar flavor to a Goldfish cracker, but with a much stiffer texture. Cute in shape and design, this inclusion was really fun, and was a great addition to the Halloween box.

Kamesen Crackers - Retail Value $3.00

The last item we received was not pictured at all in the pamphlet, but did pop up when I scanned the included QR code. This snack was a bag of Kamesen crackers. These lightly salted wheat crackers are savory with a slight nutty flavor. Shaped a little like flowers, these would make a great addition to soup, but are fine on their own. Reminiscent of a crouton, these were fun to try and a great finish to this month's TokyoTreat box.

The Verdict

As I mentioned before, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, but TokyoTreat was new to me this month. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I can say I am beyond impressed with this subscription. Not only was this curation a fabulous mix of sweet and savory snacks, but the fun packaging and amount of treats was the best I've seen. While we didn't really enjoy the Halloween Snack Stick, that was only one strike out of sixteen snacks, which is statistically pretty dang good! We are already looking forward to November's box. Any ideas on the theme?! Comment below!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 10/15.

Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 16 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.13 a pack, this is a bit more pricy than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
