Hygge Subscription Box Review, September 2024

Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment — 4-5 items for Standard box subscribers and 5-6 for Deluxe box subscribers.

This is a review of the Deluxe Hygge Box.

Note: The Hygge Box currently offers both Standard and Deluxe subscription tiers, but starting next month the offerings will merge, and only the Deluxe box will be available. This ensures even more value and a curated experience with every delivery! Plus that last Deluxe item is always so amazing, I promise you'll be happy with it.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening the Box

My mail arrives in the late afternoon, and typically I gather my Hygge box from the porch, tuck it away, and wait to open it until the next morning when I can do it quietly and intentionally, with no distractions. This month the light was coming through the window just right, my family was occupied upstairs, and I just couldn't help myself from enjoying the experience right away. The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription is printed under the box lid, and the month's curation is packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper.

The card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. September's focus is on Golden Hour, the hour before the sun disappears behind the horizon line. Ah! How apt that I stepped out of my usual rhythm to open this box during Golden Hour! It's beautiful timing for this theme, as the long days of summer sunlight fade into a cozier season. Let's see what items they've packed for us to embrace the change.

What's Inside the September 2024 Hygge Box

Hygge Haus Forage Candle, 4 oz - Retail Value $16

How does Hygge Box manage to find all the most peaceful, grounding aromas? This small jar candle's scent is called Forage, which is a wood & spice blend, and I can't think of a better way to describe it than simply that. Both layers of this scent elicit a hunker-for-the-evening and wrap-yourself-in-a-blanket feel, which is the epitome of the hygge way of living.

Chapters Tea & Coffee Magical Library Butterbrew, 1 oz - Retail Value $10

Our drinkable offering this month is loose-leaf black tea with butterscotch. When I opened the packet, the butterscotch scent was the first thing I noticed, but it wasn't strong or too sweet. Similarly, the flavor of the tea itself was plenty subtle and so pleasant. This small packet could make up to 22 cups of tea if you use a teaspoon with each serving! I hadn't heard of Chapters Tea & Coffee, but they have all sorts of blends for book-lovers, meant to evoke various settings, and judging by this one "Magical Library Butterbrew" I'd say they have it figured out.

Here's a closer look at the black tea leaves, pomegranate pieces, and calendula + sunflower + cornflower + jasmine petals in this blend.

Popped to Perfection! Pumpkin Spice Caramel Corn, 7 oz - Retail Value $7

Further leaning into the autumnal spirit, we were sent a bag of pumpkin spice caramel corn. If you're a caramel corn lover, it's the exact crunchy-sweet snack you'll be looking for. The pumpkin spice flavor is not at all overpowering, and is a festive update to the norm. No one in my family can quite get past how the caramel sticks in your teeth, so we each enjoyed a handful and then passed the rest of the bag to a neighbor.

You can see they don't skimp on the caramel!

Now Designs by Danica Recycled Cotton Napkins, Set of 4 - Retail Value $18

About 9 years ago I put cloth napkins on our wedding registry, and we haven't looked back. That original set we were gifted has held up well, and some additions have been made along the way, so that we now have a rolling cart of linens kept near our table with a giant stack of cloth napkins (plus bibs, placemats, and table cloths). We use them for everything. I'm chuffed by this new recycled cotton set of four tasteful plaid napkins to add to our collection and can't wait to see how they might soften over time.

Kawaii Gel Pen - Buy 3 for $14

Hygge may be defined as slowing down, being present in the moment, and fostering a sense of well-being, but don't let that fool you into thinking it takes itself too seriously. It's also finding joy in the simple things, and inviting in meaningful celebrations, creativity, and socialization. This pen's ink tube is decorated with a sweet stack of bear heads, pumpkin, and a couple of toast-shaped critters genuinely made my whole family smile. You can even take them out and change the order if you like! I also took a picture of the wax protecting the tip—always a sign of a quality pen.

Owl Print Journal - Retail Value $16

This is the last month of Standard and Deluxe Hygge boxes, and so Deluxe box subscribers are sent one more item for now. It's this hardcover spiral notebook with breathtaking, gilded owl illustrations on the front and back. The notebook is organized into four sections with dividers. The first two sections have lined pages, the third has dotted pages in the style of a bullet journal, and the fourth section has blank pages. This notebook makes my stationery-loving heart swoon! I have been mulling over an idea for a children's book and I love that this notebook could be the home to both text brainstorming and doodles.

Verdict

The Hygge Box never, ever disappoints, and this month was no exception. The cozy vibes were completely captured by the candle and tea, while the fun side of the hygge spirit was explored with pumpkin-spice caramel corn and a cute pen. The notebook ties the box together to create a curation of useful, joyful things.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Kind of. As an individual box it is still available in the shop at the time of publication. As a subscription, if you order by the last day of the month, your first box will be the next box, and your order will ship between the 15th-18th of the following month (unless sold out). Subsequent monthly boxes will also ship between the 15th and 18th.

Value Breakdown: The Hygge Deluxe box costs $52 per month with annual subscription. Deluxe subscribers received 6 items this month. That breaks down to $8.66 per item. The total retail value inside the Deluxe box is $71, which was calculated using a prorated value for the pen. I'm satisfied with this value!

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who prioritizes spending time outside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
