MEL STEM is a monthly subscription box for kids 5-10+ who would like to learn more about science and STEM concepts in an exciting way. Through hands-on kits, kids can learn about topics such as aircraft, light, hydraulics, and earthquakes, while experiencing real-life applications. Each month contains a new experiment and STEM lesson for kids to dive into, and will contain everything they need to safely and easily complete at home. MEL STEM costs $39.90/month; $29.90 per month with an annual subscription.

Hi! I’m back to review another MEL box. This month we received the "Gyroscope" box from MEL STEM, which is for kids ages 5+.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

MEL STEM: Gyroscope

My son was so excited when this box arrived in the mail and couldn’t wait to open it.  Both the box and the direction packet were visually engaging, which is perfect for the target age of early elementary, though it still made an impression on my middle schooler.

Mel Science: STEM - Gyroscope Project

Project Booklet

I really liked that there was a clear list of contents (with labels and pictures) inside the front cover of the direction packet. This would have been nice with the kits for older kids too (see my recent MEL Physics Review for more on that).

The directions began with a 4-page comic, then, what can only be described as "Lego-style" directions, each step was clearly numbered with supplies for that step, shown along with assembly illustration.

Gyroscope

The directions were very clear and easy to follow.  My very experienced builder did have a piece snap off at one point that required pressure to join pieces (the material is lightweight layered pressed wood). Luckily the piece that snapped off didn't impact the function.

This box built a gyroscope that kids can spin, then modify to a different spinner. Three total versions were made. We could see this might be frustrating to some young children who might not want to take their build apart to modify it.  Though this could be a plus: if a parent previews the directions, they could plan to spread this out over several days, giving the child more time to play with the spinner, then continue with a different modification each day.

Also included in the direction packet was a nice explanation of the real life applications of gyroscopes, as well as some games and puzzles.  There were several components to keep kids busy, and this was appropriate for the targeted age. A 5-7 year old might need some help, but my 11 year old did it independently and enjoyed it.

Final Thoughts - Was This Box Worth It?

Yes! The Gyroscope box is a wonderful way to get children interested in science!

My son thought that these projects were fun and engaging.  He learned new concepts from the experiment.

As an educator, I would definitely recommend these to parents looking for activities, or even gifts, with a hands-on focus.

To Wrap Up:

The Cost: $39.90 per month, $29.90 per month with an annual subscription.
