Rockets of Awesome is a quarterly children’s clothing subscription box. Subscribers fill out a detailed style profile which, in turn, your assigned stylist uses to handpick clothes and accessories for your child. There is a $20 styling fee which is credited towards whatever you decide to keep.

My son was excited when he saw this box.

When you sign up for Rockets of Awesome, you answer several questions to help their merchandising team understand what your child likes and dislikes, such as color, style, and pattern preferences. Based on your answers (and using an algorithm) they hand-select items for your child. So, your box will look different than this!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Rockets of Awesome for Boys box.

Rockets of Awesome Spring 2018 Review

Customization of your box has increased with the following changes to this service. Once the stylist selects pieces for your child’s clothing box, and before it ships, you receive an email informing you that your sneak peak is ready.  Similar to Trunk Club, you can then see all the items in your box and choose to accept the item or swap it out.

Once you have decided what to keep or say “No Thanks” to, you then have the option to either have the stylist replace the item or you can pick the replacement yourself. I opted to keep everything but two items and choose my own replacements.

I had 12 items to choose from for the replacement items (the above picture represents some of those options). I swapped out 2 shirts, but I could choose shirts, pants, shorts or even a hoodie to replace the items with.  It was a really great selection and I felt it made the process more customized.

If you choose to keep the whole box, they reduce the cost to a flat $150. My box went from $192 to $150, a $42 dollar savings.

Each box comes with a price sheet listing each item of clothing. Rockets of Awesome designs and manufactures their own independent line of clothing (sizing available in 3-14). I would say the clothing runs large. Something that strikes me about the clothes is how soft they are. The clothes wash well and my son always seems to be comfortable. The clothes are priced higher than discount clothes, but the quality is apparent.

Essential Zip Hoodie Heather Navy - Price to keep: $26.50

This hoodie was very soft and I loved the heathered knit. It is simple and will work with many outfits. It was easy to get on my son and it was a good weight for spring, making it a win for us.

Football Tee Heather Oatmeal – Price to keep: $19.50

I love football tees on my son. They have a simple design, but for whatever reason just fit my son well. I was excited to see this in person. It’s soft and comfy. My son clearly loved it too.

Active Graphic Tee Electric Cobalt – Price to keep: $22.50

This shirt is made from performance fabric that breathes well and will be perfect for the playground. It is very lightweight which works well for my son, who is always warm. I love the graphic as it feels like my son is always going about 100 mph.

INK-redible Heather Dark Lake – Price to keep: $22.50

Being a fan of puns, I loved this one. My son is too young to understand puns, so this one is really for me. He liked the glasses on the octopus though, which I thought was a fun detail. This was the least exciting shirt for my son.

Tiger Tee Heather Azure – Price to keep: $22.50

My son loves all things animals, so he liked this shirt and its bright color immediately. This shirt is so soft!

Lightning Jogger Heather Comet – Price to keep: $26.50

These were a little big on my son, but I don’t mind because they stayed up with the drawstring. I love the lightning bolts on these; my son seems apathetic. They were soft and after washing, even softer, so he didn’t mind wearing them one bit.

Textured Joggers Navy–  Price to keep: $29.50

I loved these right out of the box because they can really be dressed up or down with their almost jeans-like look. My son loved them and now wears them on repeat.

Dig Lightening Active Tee Neon Mango – Price to keep: $22.50

This was my son’s favorite item from the box, which shocked me. He loves the color and keeps asking to wear it. I didn’t expect that, which is one of the things I love about these boxes, you find things that you otherwise wouldn’t think to try. He wanted to try this on first and loved the fabrics feel. He will live in this on hot playground days this spring and summer.

Here is my son in the clothes in various combinations.

About returns: shipping back the items you choose not to keep is made simple with their pre-paid return label.

Verdict: We had great success with this Rockets of Awesome box. The changes, such as being able to swap out items, really made a great difference to me. I was happy that Rockets of Awesome also now discounts the merchandise if you keep the whole box. The clothes all felt like they adhered to my son’s style preferences and I feel like they will get tons of use. I recommend this box for anyone who wants unique, quality clothing and doesn’t have a lot of extra time to go clothes shopping for the little boy in their life. I was very happy with this season’s Rockets of Awesome Box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! The box ships seasonally or upon signing up. Remember that the box will be based on your child’s preferences, so your box will not be exactly like mine.

Value Breakdown: The box costs $150.00 to keep everything, and the value was $192. That means I spent approximately $18.75 on each item after the discount. Without the discount, each item would be the cost listed above (ranging from 19.50-29.50).

What would you compare the quality to? Style wise, it’s very similar to what I’ve bought at Carters or Gymboree at significantly cheaper, so I’d expect at least Hanna Andersen/Tea Collection quality.

That’s about right. I would have said CrewCuts.. the fabric is a nice heavy weight and the seams are better. Aside from athletic items, the fabric is consistently s cotton or cotton blend. Other boxes I’ve tried have been heavy on synthetics.

I agree, most thing are cotton with less synthetic material. I love th quality of the clothes as they hold up well to washing and feel so soft!

I love this box for my daughter. The quality is much higher than other kids clothing boxes, and I’ve had that same experience where my daughter goes crazy over something I wouldn’t have picked out myself. They have a great read on what kids like.
