Sensory TheraPlay Box Review August 2024

Becca Peterson

Sensory TheraPlay Box is a monthly subscription service for children on the autism spectrum, or with sensory processing issues. Each box is filled with sensory toys or games that help develop motor skills or address varying sensory needs through therapeutic play.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

After an 8 month hiatus, guess which box I received in the mail?! That's right, the Sensory TheraPlay box finally arrived! I don't know who was more excited, me, or the boys, but what a great surprise! Packed with fun and entertaining toys and fidgets, my kids couldn't wait to dive into this month's curation. Read below to see what we received.

What's Inside This Box

Each box comes with a one-page insert, which includes photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information and a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. I love the fact that this sheet specifies how certain items can be used, and what goals can be accomplished. Since it is August, I didn't get to try any of these fidgets out with my school kiddos, but my own boys loved all of them!

I adore this quote, and am going to start the school year with this as my personal mantra. With a world full of negativity, it is easy to get bogged down, but if you always believe that something wonderful is about to happen, it only makes sense that positivity with manifest! I have this cardstock postcard tacked onto my refrigerator to remind me of my goal throughout the day - isn't the design cute too?!

Lifelines "Shake it Up" Sensory Journal - Retail Value $12.99

So the first item I pulled from this month's box ended up being the one with the highest retail value and was my favorite inclusion. Honestly, I don't think I've ever been excited about a journal before, but this 8.5" X 6.5" version seriously has it all! Bound with a tan leather looking cover, it has a liquid filled front which can be manipulated for green and blue bubbles. While I have been acquainted with the step-on floor versions of these, I have never seen them included in a journal, so I was thrilled! Not only is the front sensory friendly, but the blank pages feature differing embossed designs on the edges for more tactile sensory input! This magnificent creature also includes an elastic pen holder and an elastic band to keep the pages closed. My boys wanted this journal sooo bad, but I kept this baby for myself. I go back for inservice days next week and you can bet I will be jotting all my notes down in this, while keeping my fingers busy throughout the long days of meetings! What a fantastic inclusion!

Strudel 3D Keyboard Fidget - Retail Value $9.95

I love typing. When I worked at the hospital, I did some registration paperwork, and my co-worker and I would race to see who could finish their sheets first. To this day, I do speed tests like "Nitro Type" because I'm just goofy like that! When I dug into this month's box and found this keyboard fidget, I had to chuckle! With two computer keys attached to a base and keychain, these buttons click down to create the crisp sound of a mechanical keyboard! I was obsessed from the get-go, and actually put it on my purse. It is a little loud, but I found it to come in extremely handy when driving, especially after hitting about 20 red lights trying to get out of Duluth. The kids also have found this keyboard fidget to be satisfying, but the rule is, it has to stay attached to my purse so we don't lose it!

Color by Playroom Dragon - Retail Value $8.99

The next item we received was this foamy activity kit used to provide tactile sensory input while working on fine motor skills and hand strengthening. Complete with poking tools and a stand, this project, whem completed, can be displayed for all to see! With five different colors of foam, you can push them into the divided portions of dragon and create a picture. Geared towards kids 5+, Charlie at 9 didn't feel it was too "babyish" for him, and had a fun time feeling the foam balls and stuffing them into the picture board. Once finished, we added the stand and put it up it in the living room to show off. Because the back stays exposed, I did go check on it a few days later to see if it has hardened into place, but it feels like it could be pulled out and decorated again! Cool toy!

Dino Hoop Toss - Retail Value $5.99

The next included item was quite nostalgic for me. I remember being younger than Charlie and going to Sunday school, where I found a hoop toss on the bookshelf in the basement. This was a very 80s version, and wasn't necessarily portable, but still fun! Now, we have a portable version of our own, that is dinosaur themed! This circular ring toss was easily stored in my purse and featured a ton of different shaped hoops with two pegs. Charlie absolutely loved this game, and was amazing at it (getting all of the hoops on the pegs at once!) I stunk, but still had fun trying! Though my kids do have a Nintendo Switch, we are pretty strict about screen time, so Charlie asked if he could bring this to my dermatology visit. It kept him busy (and quiet) the entire appointment (even when it was 35 minutes late) and the doc actually commented on the nostalgia it gave her, too!

Boba Squishies - Retail Value $3.99

I am not a tea drinker, and haven't gotten on the bubble tea train, but these squishies were still cute! This blind bag included three little squishies that pop back into their original shape, but offer a stress reducing feeling. Hank liked these and put them in the back pocket of the car for when we are on the go. Fun!

Tiny Tumblers - Retail Value $4.99

The last item we received this month was a set of tiny tumblers. These squishy little spike balls are sticky and look slightly like cockleburs. While fun to squeeze in your hand, they are amazing for throwing at your wall! My husband had a great time chucking them at the kitchen wall and watching them race down. This truly is a box designed with fun in mind for the whole family!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $42.00 + shipping (Save with longer subscriptions)

The total retail value of our box using a mix of listed and found retail values comes to $46.90, which is a few dollars more than the cost of the box, though some of the online retail values were higher than those that were listed, so I do think the value is more. Each and every item was useful and fun, and brought joy to my household - even my "stoic" husband! Overall, we are extremely happy with this subscription and utilize the contents of this box (along with previous boxes) almost every single day!

Key Takeaways

If you ask my kids which subscription box is their favorite, my kids say Sensory TheraPlay is definitely it. After a 7 month hiatus, the kids were literally screaming when they found this on our doorstep, and so was I! With a variety of sensory options, we were impressed with the thoughtfulness in this curation. As an educator, I have seen a multitude of fidgets, but this box continues to surprise me! Overall, this was a fantastic box and we have utilized every single item. We can't wait to see what they have in store for September!

Even despite being an adult and about to turn 31 I think this box would be a hit with me because it has so many fun toys

Thanks for commenting Jill! Seriously, this is a mega hit for adults. Not only do I love it, but I’ve got teachers and paras popping into my room daily to give the fidgets a squeeze! Self-care at its finest for all ages!
