The Bouqs Subscription Review – April 2018

The Bouqs subscription is a flower delivery service from The Bouqs.com. They send fresh cut flowers to you or a friend as often as you'd like.

You can set your deliveries every week, every 2 weeks, every month, every 2 months, or every 4 months. Plus, you'll choose your Bouqs aesthetic ("The Farmer's Market", "The Classics", "Volcano Roses", or "Simply the Best") and the size of bouquet you prefer (Original, Deluxe, or Grand).

This is a review of the monthly subscription in the Deluxe size ($55 per month).

As soon as I opened the box, I saw instructions on how to prep and care for my fresh-cut flowers. They recommend cutting your stems at an angle at the right height for your vase and changing the water every 2 days to make your blooms last longer.

The flower arrived wrapped in corrugated cardboard for protection. The entire bunch of flowers was secured to the bottom of the box with a heavy-duty plastic tie, so they didn't bounce around in the box during shipping.

The Cost: Choose from 3 different sizes of bouquets—Original (8-14 stems) for $40 per bouquet, Deluxe (16-28 stems) for $55 per bouquet, or Grand (24-56 stems) for $70 per bouquet.

The Products: Fresh flowers from sustainable, eco-friendly farms that are cut-to-order (which means no flowers go to waste). When you sign up, you can choose the style that fits your needs, and pick a frequency for receiving your bouquets (weekly, every two weeks, monthly, every two months, or every four months). You can always pause or change your subscription settings, and even include a note (if for instance, you're sending your subscription flowers to a friend or loved one).

Good to Know: There are discounts that come from subscribing! According to the site, "1-2 Bouq Deliveries gives you a 10% discount, 3-5 qualifies for 15%, 6-12 orders is 20%, and 13+ per year is 25% off. To qualify for these discounts, you will have to pay upfront. Pay as you go is an option, but the discount is not as great."

The Bouqs April 2018 Review

There's nothing like a fresh flower arrangement! It's important to note that The Bouqs sends cut flowers that you need to prep and arrange by yourself. This is not the standard ready-to-admire flower delivery you get from your local florist. Don't worry though, prepping your flowers isn't hard and just takes a little time and love to get it right. I'll walk you through how I got my flowers out of the box and turned them into the pretty arrangement above!

The flowers came with a nice kraft card that lets me know some additional care tips and tells me the name of the bouquet I received. The design is called "Poetic" and is a mixed rose and hydrangea bouquet. If you are sending a one time gift from The Bouqs to a loved one, your custom message would appear here.

Here are my blooms out of the box bundled in two small bouquets, wrapped in clear plastic with the stems held together with a rubber band.

The most delicate flowers in this bouquet were shipped with a protective netting.

Here is a detail with the netting removed. It did a great job of protecting the dahlia blooms.

Chrysal Clear Universal Plant Care Packet

The box also included two packets of Chrysal plant food to extend the vase life of my bouquet.

I chose a large glass cylinder vase for this arrangement. I filled the vase about halfway full of water and mixed in one packet of plant food. Next, I decided to try out a flower arranging method I've seen on Pinterest where you make a grid out of clear tape so that you can have better control of where your flowers go. I made lines across the vase one way and then added lines of tape to intersect perpendicularly to give evenly spaced holes for the flowers to go. I recommend using thinner tape if you're going to try this out!

Next, I picked out the silver dollar eucalyptus from the bouquets, trimmed the ends at a 45-degree angle, and placed one stem at the hole closest to the edge of the vase at the top, bottom, right, and left sides of my tape grid. From there I started from the middle with the fancier flowers and filled in around with the full hydrangeas and roses. I trimmed all of the flower stems and removed guard petals from the roses.

I was inspired by the more casual flower arrangements I've seen where eucalyptus or other leafy filler plants cascade out from the vase rather than standing straight up.

Deluxe Poetic Bouquet

I had a lot of fun creating this arrangement and trying something new! The flowers all arrived in great shape but some of the eucalyptus leaves were wilted. I'm excited to see how the roses open up over the next few days to fill in some gaps in my finished arrangement. The white calla lilies and dahlias, white and pink roses, soft green hydrangeas paired with eucalyptus create a palette perfectly suited to my taste and I feel proud of how the end product looks for my first try with a grid tape method!

The Bouqs website says that these flowers were grown in Colombia by farmer Juanita:

Located in Bogota, this farm was founded in 1968 and grows a huge variety of focal flowers! With an average of twelve hours of sunlight and mild temperatures year-round, the region’s atmosphere makes for optimal growing conditions. Also, the farm is certified by FLORVERDE, who advocates for and reinforces training, child care and family assistance initiatives, among other fair labor standards.

Verdict: I reviewed The Bouqs a couple of times last year but this is my favorite arrangement yet. The roses add value and color to the bouquet and I am always happy to see eucalyptus as it's one of my husband's favorite scents! The colors are muted and classic and I will be proud to display these on my dining room table. My flowers arrived in great condition except for a few of the eucalyptus leaves. An arrangement like this would make a nice Mother's Day gift - but not if your mom isn't into arranging her own flowers. I am always wary of sending someone a project rather than a gift. Value is always an issue with subscriptions like this where you could likely build a similar arrangement from your local grocery store for less. For me, there is value in the convenience of having these flowers delivered, and I don't mind arranging them myself, plus I appreciate knowing more about the farm they came from. If the delight of a surprise bouquet and convenience of home delivery are pluses for you, I'd recommend trying this service. If you like to select your own cut flowers at your local store, you may not find value in this subscription.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? The bouquet you get with your subscription is a surprise, so I can't say that you will get this same arrangement unless you order it individually.
