The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club August 2018 Review
A detailed newsletter is included each month where you can read about the two featured breweries and the beer that you will find in your box. I love reading the stories behind each brewery and learning more about how they make each beer. The featured breweries for August are 16 Mile Brewing Company and River Horse Brewing Company. Now for the beers!
Inlet IPA by 16 Mile Brewing Co.
Our first brewery of the month is 16 Mile Brewing Company out of Georgetown, DE. Back in July 2009, now co-owners Brett McCrea and Chad Campbell had a dream of starting a local business. Their dream quickly turned into restoring a century-old barn that was owned by the McCrea family into a working brewhouse. In order to stay unique from fellow brewery Dogfish Head, they decided to focus on traditional British style brews with an American twist. They continue to grow since their start in 2009 and are focusing on bringing great beers to Georgetown!
The first beer from 16 Mile is their Inlet IPA, an English IPA with 6.1% alcohol and 65 IBUs. This IPA was so unique and very bold! Right away I tasted a sweet hint of caramel along with a light floral note. The pine made this beer very bold and toasty, perfect for the fall. There was a good amount of bitterness that lingers with you after each sip but paired with the overall sweetness and tart flavors everything paired out evenly. This reminded me of many pub beers that I used to drink in college, which right away made me think of the fall and watching Rugby!
Old Court Ale by 16 Mile Brewing Co.
Our next beer from 16 Mile is the Old Court Ale, an American Pale Ale with 6.1% alcohol and 35 IBUs. This is another beer that is perfect for the fall! Right away I picked up on some light apple flavors that paired nicely with the overall spice that this beer has to offer. You do taste a good amount of toast, wood, and spice without getting too much bitterness. There are also light layers of sweetness that I really enjoyed!
Hippotizing IPA by River Horse Brewing Co.
Our second brewery is River Horse Brewing Company out of Ewing, NJ. Back in 1996, two brothers started River Horse in Lambertville, NJ, located in the Delaware River. As you can see by the label, River Horse is in reference to the hippopotamus, so cute! By 2007, the brewery found new owners in Chris Walsh and Glenn Bernabeo and relocated to a larger brewery in Ewing where they produce 80,000 barrels per year!
The first beer from River Horse is the Hippotizing IPA, an American IPA with 7.5% alcohol and 76 IBUs. This beer has tons of hops, which I love! It was crisp, light, and super refreshing. I could see myself sipping on this beer all year round as it has a bit of a citrus kick that is perfect for the summer while still having some of those rich pine notes that I crave in the colder months. My husband loved this beer so much, I bet it won't last through the weekend, and my son can't get over that there are hippos (his favorite animal) on the label!
Chocolate Porter by River Horse Brewing Co.
The last beer of the month is the Chocolate Porter, with 6.7% alcohol and 15.9 IBUs. This drink is very rich and decadent as it is made with one pound of real chocolate per barrel. Along with being extra sweet, you get some toast flavors along with a roasted flavor that makes this sort of smokey. I did also taste some coffee flavors mixed in with all of the sweetness that really brought out a natural bitterness. While this drink is not something I would sip on, I did enjoy tasting it and indulging my sweet tooth!

Verdict: This Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club was filled with beers that were all new to me, which is what I love and appreciate about this box! At first, I didn't think there was a lot of variety with 2 IPAs, an ale, & a porter but they were all pleasingly unique. Every month my husband and I look forward to unboxing this together to see what beers are featured, plus reading about each brewery that we might otherwise have never heard about. This month gave us a unique variety with plenty of hops, my husband's favorite, and even a chocolate porter that really took us out of our normal beer comfort zone. That is what is so fun about beer tasting, you just never know where your taste buds will get to go!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $42.95 a month including the shipping cost. I received a total of 12 beers which is a value of $3.57 per bottle of beer, much less than you would pay for these beers if you ordered them at a pub. Plus, the overall curation and exclusivity of each brewery is where I really see the value each month.
